Ernest Shackleton was an eminent polar explorer who voyaged to the Antarctic four times, leading three of his own expeditions. He was also responsible for amongst many other achievements one heroic open-boat sea crossing to rescue his men from certain death. Shackleton is undoubtedly an iconic figure of the twentieth century, and one that we are proud to represent through our collection of fascinating, poignant and unique objects in the Polar Museum, archives and picture library. What does Shackleton have to do with our new hashtag — MuseumSpeedDating? The objects with the most votes will be made into longer, more in-depth films by a professional filmmaker. These longer films will also include material from our archive and picture library which will throw even more light on Shackleton as a man and a leader. This project all started with a grant we received from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help us grow, improve and interpret our collection of objects relating to Ernest Shackleton. We wanted to talk about the feats of scientific knowledge-building, as well as geographical exploration, which he achieved. So we have spent some time researching what we have in our collection, and what they say about the man and the life he led.

Have you ever walked out of a movie theater and said to your companion, “Wow, the science in that film was awesome? You might think, here, of Jodie Foster searching for extraterrestrial intelligence in the now-classic movie Contact. I’m pretty sure for my Can you come up with a stinker , too — a movie that got the science so wrong it was just laughable? Last week, I participated, along with six other scientists, in a “science speed-dating” event put on by the Exchange that was meant to increase the accuracy of science representation on big and little screens.
We scientists had seven minutes to explain the basics of our research and did this seven times, moving quickly between the designated rooms where seven groups of people from the entertainment industry plus some science-interested members of the public waited. We were encouraged to bring a prop we could carry in our hands, but no Powerpoint slides or video clips were allowed. In an email message to me after the event, Program Director Rick Loverd explained that since its founding in , the Exchange has hosted about events of various types, including about a dozen science speed dating gatherings:.

Discovering such mini marvels as Speed Dating , written and directed by Meghann Artes , is not only tipping the iceberg of new film ventures, but also makes all the hard work that goes into the Femme Filmmakers Festival completely worth it. Promoting the work, these short films, to make them so much more so accessible, fills me with great enjoyment and exhilaration.
Speaking with Artes for not nearly enough time, I wanted to hear her motives and passion going into such a project, as well praising the filmmaker on this fine achievement. I told her my 5 year-old daughter watched both Speed Dating and Sleepy Steve , and loved them. We are shooting in a live action film setting, with the lights, and the actors, the same crew you would use, but were also shoot a stop motion film. And, like with puppets, they would move little bits, arm movements, so slow.
It could take two hours to shoot two seconds, just walking across the room, you really have to break down movements into twelve different stages. It is really amazing, the organic nature of the actors. It could be reality, this is our word we live in, but something is a little off.
